PSN, Qriocity back online in Japan Wednesday

Japan will be the last country to regain access to Sony's PlayStation Network and Qriocity video and music services after April's cyberattack on the network. Plus: A brief outage--for maintenance.

PlayStation Network

This week Sony's home turf becomes the final country to regain access to PlayStation Network and Qriocity after a cyberattack in April forced the company to rebuild its security system.

Sony said Monday that it will fully restore PSN and Qriocity to its customers in Japan tomorrow. This follows Sony doing a "phased" restoration of access to some services in Japan at the end of May.

Sony was forced to shut down the security of PSN and Qriocity after a cyberattack on the network in mid-April compromised the personal data of more than 77 million customers. Sony kept both networks offline for almost a month while it investigated the attack, and rebuilt its security systems. Access to PSN and Qriocity were restored in the U.S. and Europe on June 2.

Japan will be the last country to regain access. PSN and Qriocity came back online in Hong Kong on June 14 and South Korea on June 24.

Last week Sony's PlayStation division announced some personnel moves at its top ranks. Sony Computer Entertainment Chairman Akira Sato and honorary chairman Ken Kuturagi, known as the "father of the PlayStation," will retire. President and CEO of the PlayStation group Kazuo Hirai will become chairman, and the PlayStation chief executive for Europe, Andrew House, will replace Hirai as president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment in the fall.

Update July 6 at 4:32 a.m. PT: Some folks got a bit of a scare when, without warning, the PlayStation Network was offline briefly for maintenance yesterday from about 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. PT, according to the PlayStation Universe blog. "Even though Sony didn't give gamers a heads up that the service would go down, it seems that they have this under control," the PSU blog said, offering reassurance. "Keep Calm and Carry On."
