Problems with QuickTime Pro 7 and Mac OS X 10.3.x (Panther): Definitive fix

CNET staff

Yesterday we reported on issues with QuickTime 7 when running under Mac OS X 10.3.x. The most dire issue involves a crash that occurs when the user attempts to use the "Show Movie Properties" option.

There is now a definitive fix, noted by a number of readers, including Mike Barron who describes the remedial process, step-by-step:
  1. Quit Quicktime
  2. In System Preferences-> International, change your language to something other than what it is set to.
  3. Quit System Preferences (and then some people need to log out and log back in, though I did not).
  4. Relaunch System Preferences and change the language back to your preferred setting.
  5. Try Quicktime again. "Show Movie Properties..." should now work.

Meanwhile, if you are having other issues with QuickTime 7 under Mac OS X 10.3.9, several readers note that simply using the QuickTime 6.5.2 re-installer will restore a mode of operation similar to before the upgrade.
