Problems with Photoshop 5.0 and Microsoft OLE Automation: a follow-up

CNET staff
Following up on our previous report about Adobe Photoshop 5.0 installing an "older" version of Microsoft OLE Automation than the one that comes with Office 98, here are some more details (as taken from the Photoshop 5.0 Read Me file):

"There is a conflict between Microsoft Office 98's OLE extension and the one that Photoshop 5.0 installs when you custom-install the FlashPix component. If Microsoft Office 98 is installed after Photoshop 5.0, then Photoshop will sometimes hang while saving FlashPix files. The solution is to install Photoshop 5.0 after Microsoft Office 98 - in this case, both Photoshop 5.0 FlashPix file-saving and Microsoft Office 98 work just fine."

This implies that you should keep the "older" version in order for Photoshop to work. The only potential hang-up with this solution is that Michael Ostrer reports that: "Once Photoshop 5.0 is installed, the first time that you launch Excel afterwards, the "First Run" application kicks in and replaces the older file." This means you are back with the newer file that can cause the "hang."
