Problems getting Mac to see FireWire peripherals

CNET staff
We have had occasional reports of a failure to recognize FireWire peripherals, especially after installing the latest firmware update (see one and two). These reports continue to filter in. Some highlights:

This Apple Discussions Board thread (among others) continues to post reader comments.

One reader reports that booting in to Open Firmware (Command-Option-O-F at startup) and entering the <reset-all> command did the trick.

One reader found that "downgrading" to the extensions from the FireWire 2.8.1 SDK succeeded for him. He adds: "The SDK came with a little app called 'Firecracker' that showed - before I changed the extensions - no FireWire activity at all on either port, both 'timed out.' After I dropped in the two extensions, FireWire Enabler 2.8.1 and FireWire Support 2.8.1, both dated January 22, 2001, I rebooted and FireWire came back. The 'Firecracker' app now doesn't show the buses timed out - instead it shows they're there and working."
