Print Preview launches Acrobat in Classic rather than OS X Preview: the solution

CNET staff
Eric Holliday found that, when running OS X 10.1, clicking the Preview button in the Print dialog box caused Classic to launch and a Classic version of Acrobat to open the file - rather than OS X's Preview or even an OS X version of Acrobat. We have seen this as well.

Steven Massey put us on track to the cure:

  1. First find a pdf document. Any one will do. Make a copy if you don't want to work with the original.
  2. Use a utility such as xFiles to determine if the file has a Creator. If it does, remove it.
  3. Now select the "Open with Application" option from the Get Info window for the file.
  4. Click on the disclosing triangle beneath the icon (presumably Acrobat). From the popup menu that appears, select Preview.
  5. This should enable the Change All button. Click to Change.

Now all pdf documents not specifically created by Acrobat should open in Preview. Ideally, the icon for the file should now shift from Acrobat to Preview. If it does not, try switching back and forth between selecting the two applications in the Show Info window. That did the trick for us.
