Prevent loss of Stickies notes when upgrading to 10.1.2

CNET staff
Yesterday we noted that your Stickies notes may be lost when upgrading to 10.1.2. You can probably protect against this by taking action before you upgrade. To do so:
  1. Use a utility such as TinkerTool to enable seeing invisible/hidden files. You will likely need to Force Quit the Finder (or logout and log back in) before the change takes effect.
  2. Go to ~/Library (e.g., the Library folder in your Home directory). Locate a file called .StickiesDatabase. Make a copy of it and drag it to another location. If desired (especially if you want to save this as a "permanent" backup), you can also eliminate the period in front of its name (so that it will remain visible even after reversing TinkerTool's setting).
  3. Upgrade to OS X 10.1.2.
  4. If your personal Stickies notes are now gone, replace the new .StickiesDatabase file with a copy of the one you just saved (make sure the period is back in front of the name, if you previously deleted it).
  5. Turn off the TinkerTool option to see hidden files.
  6. Logout and log back in. You should now see your saved Stickies notes.
