PowerPoint slow save over a network: a reply from Microsoft

The MacFixIt Report on Troubleshooting Microsoft Office 98 has an item called: PowerPoint 98: slow saving of files over a network. That item claims that Microsoft had not confirmed the problem. This appears to have changed.Edward Sharp writes: "Saving an 850K file through the LAN using PowerPoint 98 takes 16 minutes. Using PowerPoint 4, saving the same file through the LAN takes 8 seconds." A tech support person at Microsoft replied on this matter:
"After further research, I discovered, unfortunately, that this behavior, slow saving a Microsoft PowerPoint 98 presentation to a network share, is by design of PowerPoint. The only workaround I can offer is save your presentation to the local drive then copy it to the network share. PowerPoint 98 structure is similar to a container that holds several objects. All objects, pictures, drawings, text, etc., must be transmitted individually to the network share. PowerPoint has an internal buffer which handles this function."
