PowerMac G5 sleep problems: Caused by 5.1.8f7 firmware update?

CNET staff

We previously reported on a number of issues (see reports 1, 2 and 3) related to the G5 firmware 5.1.8f7 update, including inability to wake from sleep and "thermal runaway" events. Now MacFixIt reader Fred Baronet reports that his G5 will no longer automatically go to sleep after applying the update:

"To continue on the subject of sleep problems after installing the PMG5 firmware upgrade, I seem to have run into a problem I did no have before: my June 04 Dual 2.0 Power Mac simply won't automatically go to sleep after a certain period of time anymore.

"This never used to be an issue, but has been ever since the firmware upgrade. What is strange is that I can manually put the Mac to sleep without any problems, just not automatically... Have tried various solutions (combo 10.3.6 and 10.3.7 updater, zapping PRAM, repairing permissions, resetting the PMU), but all this hasn't had any effect."
