PowerBook hard drive swaps void warranty?

CNET staff
A reader was informed by an Apple Authorized Service Center that they were unable to swap the hard drive for a larger model in a Titanium G4 PowerBook without voiding the warranty. He writes: "The person at the service center told me that even if they perform the swap, it will still void the warranty! Evidently there is no way to upgrade the drive, even through an Apple authorized repair shop. Apple simply doesn't allow hard drive upgrades on machines still under warranty."

Update: Another reader confirms: "This is completely true - Apple does not allow anyone to swap the hard drive and maintain the warranty status. To the best of my knowledge, they never have, on any computer. That is not to say the task is difficult. If you swap out the drive, I suggest you keep it around, perhaps in a portable FireWire case, just in case you need the original. I swapped mine out, and when I had to send my G4 Ti in for a video related problem, I simply put the original drive back in. Not only did Apple fix the video problems, they also replaced the hard drive, since the original one was a bit whiny anyway. Individual experiences will< vary of course."
