PowerBook G4 system software glitches

CNET staff
Harry Zink found two potential problems that seem limited to Titanium PowerBooks running Mac OS X. He writes:

A fresh installation of OS X 10.1 on a Titanium PowerBooks leaves Speech recognition unusable. The Speakable Items Window is empty. It seems to be an issue with the system losing a path. An identical installation on a desktop, or PowerBook G3 Pismo works just fine (in fact, Speakable Items works extremely well under OS X - a pity it doesn't on the Titanium)

Again, on a PowerBook Titanium 667 playing a DVD, opening a QuickTime at the same time (especially if the QT movie is an MPEG movie) will cause both presentations to start stuttering, and eventually crash so horribly that a physical reboot is necessary. Engaging in the same exercise on a Pismo yields reduced performance, but never a freeze or a crash.

Both of these were verified and confirmed by a Genius Bar 'genius."'

Update: Michel Mennen says: "Same is true for iBooks." Toshimitsu Tanaka notes that Apple has confirmed this in KB article 88229 (as we also previously reported).

Bill Cheeseman adds: "When I turned speech recognition on in System Preferences on my Titanium PowerBook while the empty Speakable Items window was open on my desktop, the Speakable Items window filled up with all the speakable items as I watched."
