PowerBook G4 Double-Layer SuperDrive Special Report: Slowdown in graphics performance

MacFixIt reader Robert Kay reports that comparing the previous 1.67 GHz model PowerBook with the new double-layer SuperDrive 1.67 GHz model resulted in disappointing graphics benchmarks for the latter -- likely due to the increase in display resolution.

He also echoes earlier reports that the new display may not be as consistently lit as the previous.

Robert writes:

"I have a previous generation (10 week old) 15? 1.67, so I was able to do sided by side comparisons: The DL machine display was less consistent (mottled) and its brightness shifted more off-axis. There was also an unusual sparkling kind of effect, somewhat minimized after calibrating with Supercal. The sound from the internal speakers was obviously better on the new machine. The trackpad seemed less sensitive, and the keyboard had a different feel.

"Sadly, running xBench on both machines plugged in and side by side, the old machine (also with 2GB) was slightly faster in processor tests and significantly faster in graphics tests ? of course the 7200 rpm drive in the new machine was a lot faster. I wanted the faster drive and the digital audio i/o , the higher resolution display was supposed to be a bonus, but overall, the update is disappointing."
