Power switch failure of new Power Mac G4s: Apple replies

CNET staff
This Apple Support Discussions thread has an Apple reply to the power switch failure problem we reported here earlier this week: This issue is still under investigation. If you have an older USB keyboard, you can temporarily use the power button on it to power on the Power Mac G4. If this does not work, or you do not have an older USB keyboard, you should contact AppleCare Technical Support for further assistance. In another posting in this thread, a user had this problem and additionally "smelled burning, pinpointing it to the inside of my G4 450MP." Apple replied: "We would strongly suggest you not use the computer if there is a burning smell. Disconnect the power cables from the computer and contact the AppleCare Assistance Center again or your AASP." Matthew Fleming similarly wrote to us: "I powered off my Mac for the night, and it autobooted itself in the morning. When I woke up, it was frozen... so I went to press the reset button and noticed the glowing power button wasn't glowing. I took the thing apart down to the circuit board, and the CMOS chip smack in the center was blazing hot. Touching it for a brief moment with the back of my finger caused a blister that lasted for about a week. Apple reported having some problems with it, and told me to take it to an AASP for repair."
