Power Macintosh G4 MDD Noise Reduction Kits not doing their job?

CNET staff

While the majority of readers have reported that Apple's newly shipping US$ 19.95 Power Supply Replacement Kit - intended to reduce noise generated by Power Macintosh G4 MDD models - dramatically reduces noise, we are receiving sporadic indications of gradually increasing noise levels after installing the kit.

Mashall Marlowe writes:

"4/6//03: I just installed the new power supply and fan in my G4 867 Dual. What a difference! Silence! The noisiest sounds at boot are the hard drives. Now lets hope Apple can do as well fixing 10.2.4 and Safari."

"Things have changed in 24 hours.

"4/7/03: The noise level has changed drastically. It is now much noisier. There is a throbbing, grinding sound from the fans, and the air flow is much reduced. The noise from the fans waxes and wanes - noisy, then quiet - apparently in concert with the fan speed."

We are attempting to determine whether or not an installation error could be at fault in some of these relapse cases.
