iPod Paul Helmich adds to the growing number of users experiencing difficulty with interfacing iPods to their new Dual Optical Power Mac G4s:

"My iPod (original 5 GB version, software v. 1.2) is not recognized by my Dual 1 GHz G4 Dual Optical. The computer says it is not a MacOS X volume. Two alert boxes pop up: one offers to fix it via Disk Utility, the other asks if I want to initialize, eject or ignore the disk. It does not matter what firewire port the iPod is connected to. On the two occasions that the iPod mounted, it shows up as a removable disk. Also, when it was mounted, iTunes does not recognize it. If the iPod is attached when the computer is starting up, it takes several minutes for the computer to display the login screen. After log-in, the Finder seems to freeze and need to be relaunched several times before it acts normally."

Classic and crashes Pat Castaldo writes:

"I've been having two problems with my brand new Dual 1 Ghz Optical. A few times now it has woken from sleep to the new 'hard crash' screen that tells you you need to reboot. Also, Classic didn't work off the bat. It said there was 'no system available' in the classic control panel. After some tinkering, it showed up."

Fans louder under OS 9? Frans Geestreports that OS 9 and OS X may have different means of controlling the processor fans:

"As an owner of a new G4 dual 867, I noticed that whenever I start up in OS 9 the temperature controlled Fan keeps howling like a air raid siren; it's unbearable. However, under OS X this only happens now and then in a daily use."
