PopCap Games snares a mystery buyer?

The company behind Bejeweled and Plants vs. Zombies is being sold for $1 billion, but the buyer is unknown, according to a TechCrunch report.

PopCap Games, the company behind the hit titles Bejeweled and Plants vs. Zombies, is reportedly in the process of being acquired for more than $1 billion.

Multiple sources tell TechCrunch that the company is definitely in play. Just one problem--the sources don't know who the buyer is.

The blog reported that game giant Zynga took a look at PopCap, but suggested that with an estimated annual revenue range of $100 million to $150 million and a price of more than $1 billion, the premium might have been too high.

EA's name has also come up, though for a company with a market cap of $7.4 billion, this would be a huge acquisition. But the company is no stranger to social gaming. The video game developer picked up Playfish in 2009 for about $400 million in an effort to tap the explosive growth of social networks and games made for those platforms.

PopCap is perhaps best known for its Bejeweled franchise, which has sold more than 50 million units since first release in 2000. The most recent installment, Bejeweled 3, arrived for the PC in December and is expected to hit other platforms later this year.

A PopCap representative declined to comment, saying "we don't comment on this type of rumor and speculation."

Update June 23 at 9:47 a.m. PT: TechCrunch later updated its story to say that Electronic Arts seems to be the buyer, citing multiple sources.
