PlayStation Vita coming to the UK on 22 February

At last we have a UK release date for the PS Vita -- 22 February. So it'll miss Christmas, but should brighten up the New Year no end.

Gamers rejoice -- we have a UK release date for the Sony PlayStation Vita. The handheld console will hit our shelves on 22 February next year, reports the Telegraph, missing Christmas but helping us game our way through the post-CES slump no end.

Sony Computer Entertainment's president and CEO Jack Tretton made the announcement at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco. He also gave us details of a price -- £229 for the Wi-Fi-only model, and £279.99 for the 3G-enabled one.

It'll also hit the rest of Europe, the US, Canada, Australasia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America on the same day. The lucky folk from Japan will get their hands on it on 17 December, more than a full two months before us.

The launch line-up is yet to be confirmed, but Sony has said that over 100 games are in development. In a blog post following the announcement, Tretton listed some of those in the pipeline, including Sound Shapes, Resistance: Burning Skies, Unchartered Golden Abyss, Assassin's Creed, FIFA, and Call of Duty. All the usual suspects then.

He also took a pop at the fiddly controls for games on phones. "Now you'll be able to play shooters and action titles on-the-go with controls that are familiar, and you won't have to block out the gorgeous screen to interact with the games," he wrote. iPhone, anyone?

Tretton reiterated the social networking possibilities of PS Vita, with Facebook, Foursquare, Skype, and Twitter being usable on the console. So you can stay in touch with friends and boast about your gaming achievements.

When it launches in Japan, the Vita will have 26 titles available. Last month news reached us that the Vita will be region-free, so you can play games from anywhere in the world on it. Get those import games websites bookmarked.
