Chris Avellone has given his blessing for Colin McComb's Planescape: Torment successor, which is currently in the very early stages of development.

What would be the next-best thing to Planescape: Torment ported to the iPad? A "spiritual successor" would fit the bill quite nicely. According to Eurogamer, there's one in the works.

It's not by Chris Avellone, who is one of our favourite video game developers, but currently working away busily on Project Eternity. Spearheading the Planescape: Torment successor is the man who was Avellone's second-in-command on the original, Colin McComb — who, likewise, has an impressive list of credits to his name.

McComb told the gaming website:

The Project: Eternity Kickstarter took them in a different direction than a direct successor. I told Chris that I would not work on a Torment successor without his approval. We talked about it for a bit, and he told me that he was entirely comfortable with me moving forward on a Torment game without him, and he gave me his explicit blessing to do it.

He also told Eurogamer that the game was in the very, very early stages of pre-production, but then went on to detail some of his plans and ideas for the title.

I have a lot of ideas about what to put into a new Torment game, but my primary goal would be to help the player tell a story that was evocative of the original Torment, without aping it. To be faithful to the odyssey of the Nameless One, and to recognise that it has ended and that stories of Torment are ongoing.

Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy.

Thank you to Chris for the tip!
