Pionner DVR-105 firmware updater: Can't be installed on 2003 Macs

CNET staff

Pioneer is now sending customers updated firmware for its DVR-105 4x DVD-R/RW drive. The new 1.30 version firmware is not yet available on the company's site, but can be obtained by contacting their customer service department, which will in turn electronically transfer the update.

One major caveat is that the updater will only apply properly in Mac OS 9.2.2, and will not work in Mac OS X's Classic mode. This makes it virtually impossible for owners of 2003 Macs - only capable of booting into Mac OS X - to upgrade their firmware without physically removing the drive from their system and running the updater on a Mac OS 9 booting machine.
