Beta may not have to be deactivated In our previous coverage of Photoshop CS3 installation problems, we noted that included installation instructions state that a previously activated copy of the Photoshop CS3 is to be deactivated before installation and activation of a retail copy of Photoshop CS3. This obviously represents a conundrum if the user has already deleted the Photoshop CS3 beta application from his or her system.

We've now received word from Adobe that the CS3 beta may not need to be deactivated before installation of the retail CS3, despite the contrary instructions.

John Nack, Senior Product Manager for Photoshop told MacFixIt:

"It seems there shouldn't be any problem for users who've removed the Photoshop CS3 beta without activating it"

Installation problems (cont.): caches may need to be cleared We previously noted an issue where installation of Photoshop CS3 fails if any remnants of the Photoshop CS3 Beta are present on the target volume. Installation may also fail for other reasons, including presence of CS2 applications and more.

Previously reported solutions include running the CS3 clean-up script, manually removing all pertinent files and creating a new administrator account with which to install Photoshop CS3.

It now appears that users may also need to clear caches -- after removing all vestiges of the CS3 beta -- with one of many popular utilities (such as Tiger Cache Cleaner) before proper installation of retail Photoshop CS3 can occur.

MacFixIt reader Gary Coyne writes:

"In the Tabbed selection on Tiger Cache Cleaner, select the Caches tab, select 'Medium Cleaning,' and check all three options of 'Clean Local Cache,' 'Clean System Cache,' and "'lean All Users Caches.' After a restart, the recalcitrant program will be officially removed from your system and you can then install all of the CS3 programs."

When does the Photoshop CS3 beta expire? Several readers have inquired about the expiration date. According to our previous coverage: May 4th, 2007.
