Intel researchers have developed the world's first silicon chip capable of producing a high-quality continuous laser beam. Eight lasers are built into a single silicon chip.

Light is amplified inside the chip, and a laser beam exits through the thin optical fiber on the right. Two slender metal probes activate an electronic device, which removes excess electrons, enabling the laser to emit a stream of light.
