Pay for sexy Instagram pics, help Sandy victims
Photographer thinks up a crafty fundraising scheme: trade candid and sexy photos of New Yorkers for donations to storm recovery efforts.
Photographer Clayton Cubitt is using some of his recent, slightly naughtier work to entice donations for Hurricane Sandy victims, but with a unique Instagram- and Twitter-based twist.
So far we've only seen two storm babe shots, including one that's complete with the requisite DOLCat (drooling on laptop) and another that would would win the approval of Sir Mix-A-Lot. With a little more attention to the cause, hopefully Cubitt will need to fill a few memory cards with some more sexiness soon.
Tumblr has this week thrown its promotional and meme-generating weight behind another New York photographer trying to keep the fundraising focus on the victims ofthis week.
As a Brooklyn-based colleague of mine at Crowdsourcing.org first reported, Tumblr has teamed up with Humans of New York, the wildly popular project and Tumblr blog of New York photographer Brandon Stanton, to solicit donations via an Indiegogo campaign.
Indiegogo and PayPal, which processes payments for the crowdfunding platform, are waiving their fees for the project (and all others that benefit Sandy recovery).
As of this writing, after just a few days online, the campaign has already exceeded its $100,000 goal. Funds go to the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation to fund direct aid to victims.
Incentives to donate include Tumblr-branded swag, HONY prints and, even the beat-up camera Stanton uses, for a donation of $30,000. And yes, some of the HONY prints could also be considered sexy, but more intriguing in my book is the prospect of owning a print of the above Manhattan-style Gandolf portrait.
