Panther faxing: Auto-email problems; issue with names in number field

In the past two days we've received reports of two different issues relating to faxing in Mac OS X 10.3. Davis Jefferson is having trouble getting OS X to email him when the computer receives a fax (an option found in the faxing tab of Print & Fax preferences):

"I had not seen this specific problem listed before, but I cannot get the Pather fax system to email me after it receives a fax. My system will save the fax, print the fax, but not email it. I never tried this before 10.3.7 so I cannot tell if the update is related to the problem, although I can conclude from reading other online sources that this DID work at sometime in Panther history...By the way, PageSender from SmileOnMyMac.com works great."

On a different topic, James Chumbley found that when he accidentally put an alphabetical name in the fax number field when sending a fax in OS X, his computer froze completely:

"My iBook G4, running 10.3.7, is just ten days old. I tried to send a fax today and broke the operating system all to pieces. The problem was my fault. In the 'To' box, I entered the name of the company rather than their fax number. This error hung the fax application and the internal modem, and the computer could not be stopped. No mouse. No keyboard. No apps. No nothing."

After spending a few hours on the phone with Apple to try to fix the problem, James eventually had to reinstall OS X in order to use the modem again.
