Regarding the new Palm MacPac software (now also mirrored by Apple), Jamie Dihiansan writes (and I added the "notes"):

"The new software uses Claris Emailer as the default email client (when you click the envelope icon next to an email address in Contacts). You cannot configure it to use any other email client (leaving Outlook Express users out in the cold)."

Note: The email client is controlled by an AppleScript file in the Scripts folder. In particular, if you select "Field Options" from the popup menu to the right of the email line, you get a chance to choose a Script File to link to the AppleScript button.

Update: Rick Roberts sent me a "Create Outlook Express Message" script. I put it in the Scripts folder and it worked. Brian Rutter informs me that there is an Outlook Express script in the Extras (I have not downloaded this yet.)

When I first clicked the email AppleScript button linked to Emailer, it tried to launch Emailer and then froze. I had to force quit Emailer and Palm Desktop in order to recover. After a few restarts, it now seems to work.

Another script indicates that Netscape Communicator is the default browser for URL launching.

For Eudora mail users, Actual Software has provided a demonstration version (included with MacPac) of their email conduit that synchronizes Palm Mail with Eudora Lite and/or Eudora Pro. Shana Corporation has also included both their basic and advanced versions of Palm Expense Creator; DataViz has included a demo version of Documents to Go. This is all included with the Extras download; not the basic download.

"If you have password protected items on your PalmPilot, they aren't password protected in the desktop."

Note: This is confirmed in the MacPac Read Me file: "The Show/Hide Private Records feature is not available in this version of Palm Desktop software for Macintosh. Your data will remain private on your Palm Computing platform handheld, but will not be hidden in Palm Desktop software."

Additionally, "The Purge Events feature is not available in this version of Palm Desktop software for Macintosh."
