Just in case you were in doubt of the mass appeal (and, let's be frank, borderline addictive qualities) of Blizzard's new team-based shooter Overwatch, the developer has backed it up by selling more than 7 million copies on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in just over a week.

It's a slight step down from Overwatch's 9.7 million-strong open beta, which gave players a chance to try out the game prior to release for free. Given that the game was only officially released on May 24, there's plenty of time to chase down that figure.

Speaking of figures, those 7 million players have already spent a combined 119 million hours contesting control points, pushing payloads and complaining about yet another Bastion winning play of the game.

Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime chalks it up to the game's wide appeal to players of all skill levels -- a front where many online shooters stumble. "Over the months and weeks leading up to release we saw a lot of love and support for Overwatch -- from Blizzard gamers, FPS fans, and people who'd never picked up a game like this before," he said in a press release. CNET's own Seamus Byrne had some thoughts on that front.

For comparison World of Warcraft, the proverbial feather in Blizzard's online gaming cap, had an enviable peak player base of 12 million subscribers in 2010. You can check out CNET's FAQ for Overwatch here.
