OSS 3D can cause unexpected application quits

CNET staff

We previously reported that the presence of the OSS 3D plug-in -- a tool used for real-time audio enhancement -- can cause issues with iTunes 7.0.x, including an inability to obtain previews of media from the iTunes Store and more.

Users have now begun reporting difficulties in other applications caused by the OSS 3D plug-in, including unexpected quits.

MacFixIt reader Nasser writes:

"It was OSS 3D version 2.0 causing applications to quit unexpectedly. Now I uninstalled it and removed all files with OSS in its name, all applications are running smoothly. One thing i can't understand, what does OSS 3D has to do with Google Earth or Apple Mail."

As such, if you are experiencing inexplicable sudden application quits, and have OSS 3D installed, you may want to try uninstalling the software by navigating to the Applications/OSS 3D directory and launching the OSS 3D Uninstaller.

UPDATE: The developer of OSS 3D has released a new version of the software -- 2.0.1 -- that may resolve some of the aforementioned issues. Among the enhancements:

  • Improved compatibility with applications
  • Added support for scroll wheel on the mouse
  • Added global hotkey to bring up OSS 3D in front
  • Entire range of OS X applications supported: VLC, iTunes 7, Skype, iChat and more
  • Daemonized Audio Server
  • Independent OSS 3D Console application
