OS X Server and sending text files via FTP

CNET staff
Chris Kemberling writes of an apparent problem with OS X Server 10.1 and sending text files via FTP:

"Plain text files being sent to the server are now appearing with additional carriage returns and spaces.

This server has been acting as an FTP server since we installed it in July. This process occurs several times daily and we have had no problems until updating from 10.0.4 to 10.1. Looking at the files in a straight text program like BBEdit you can see that the carriage returns and spaces have been added.

We contacted Apple and they confirmed that the FTP Service is different in version 10.1 and that it is configured to handle the new UTF-8 FTP standard which accommodates Japanese characters. After much back and forth, they told us that the only way we could assure a clean transfer is to FTP binary only.

We then asked how difficult it would be to take the FTP Server back to version 10.0.4 and they told us that we would need to format the drive and perform a complete new 10.04 install. We currently have a fix in place running NCFTP v. 2.7 and it handles the FTP transfers fine."
