VPC and sleep conflict Andy Greener writes: With Virtual PC 5.0 running, any attempt to put my PowerBook G4 to sleep causes it to hang, with no way to get things working again, other than a hard restart." Connectix told him this is a "known problem." Andrew Treloar confirms this, also using a PowerBook G4.

Update: Andy Greener replies: "Connectix now tell me that the symptom is specific to the new 550 and 667Mhz TiBooks only."

iTunes size in OS X vs. OS 9 Benjamin Everson noted that iTunes for OS X is over 26MB in size while the OS 9 version is less than 4MB. The reason? The OS X version has 16 lproj folders, used for multi-language support, that almost entirely account for the difference in size.

QuicKeys, Login Items, and Carbon vs. Cocoa apps Regarding our previous mention that QuicKeys must be the last item in the Login Items list to assure that it loads properly at login, CE Software told Kee Hinckley that the reason for this is: "There was a problem where carbon apps wouldn't run if launched after Cocoa apps in the login startup."

Equation Editor already available Regarding last week's mention that MathType for OS X would be released soon, s couple of readers noted that a scaled down version, namely Equation Editor, is already available for OS X. There is a version of this included with Microsoft Word as well as with AppleWorks 6. For example, to find it in AppleWorks 6, go to the AppleWorks folder and tunnel down through AppleWorks Essentials/Equation Editor/Carbon. There you will see a fully carbonized version of Equation Editor 3.8. (Thanks, Jonathan Simon and Ron Bannon.)

Internet Explorer Preference settings oddities: a follow-up Regarding last week's item noting that "Explorer's 'Use Web Proxy For All" option could not be disabled. several readers (Carlos Trevino, Dan Rackerby, and Jim McCarty) replied that the reason was that Explorer uses the Proxy settings stored in Network System Preference's Proxies tab. Changing the setting there should modify the Explorer setting. Unfortunately, when we tried this, it had no effect.

JavaScript glitch in Explorer? James Latta found that Explorer for OS X does not appear to support JavaScript features that are supported by OS 9 versions of Explorer or by Netscape. He writes: "A good example is the new personal support pages at the Knowledge Base. I tried to change my preference settings and nothing happened. I switched to Netscape 6.2 and was able to change preferences with no problem. I have spoken to Apple Technical support and they were able to duplicate the symptom."

FileMaker and mail oddity? Chris Isaac writes: "On my Mac. whenever a FileMaker 5.5 script sends mail, it launches the Classic environment, and Office 2001 Entourage icon flashes in the toolbar. However, Entourage v. X sends the email."

Eudora URL bug Richard Cook found that, when using Eudora, if he clicks on a URL in an email, it correctly launches Explorer and goes to the web site. However, when clicking on a URL after Explorer was already launched, it would not go to the web site. The Explorer window came to the front but did not change from its prior location. This happened with Netscape as well, but not iCab. Mark Sealey infoms us that this is a "known issue" for Eudora, as cited here.

Knowledge Base and Sherlock: no longer work together? A downside to Apple's recent Knowledge Base upgrade is that we can no longer search the database via the Sherlock "Apple Knowledge Base" plug-in. No matter what search term we use, we get "no results found" as the reply.
