Lack of Rage Pro support Threads in Apple's Discussion Boards (one and two) cover user complaints about a lack of "true" video driver support for ATI Rage Pro Macs. This does not mean the Macs cannot run OS X, but it does mean decreased performance, especially when running games.

FWB and OS X Beware of using Hard Disk ToolKit 4.5.x (the latest version) to format a drive you intend to use with Mac OS X. It is apparently not fully compatible with Mac OS X. We have received reports of broken folder icon startup crashes that we believe are linked to using this. This FWB web page confirms that HDT does not yet support OS X, but suggests that a drive already formatted with it should allow an OS X installation.

Image Capture graininess fix Regarding our previous item on Troubleshooting Image Capture, Michael Rohaly replies that he had the same graininess problem with Photoshop as reported by Chris< vargas. He writes: "This happened to me too until I thought to use "Save as." For some reason, Photoshop in Classic was choosing the lowest quality jpeg compression, a setting I have never used. I chose a higher compression and all was settled."

OS X Install CD fails to install and corrupts OS X on hard drive Becky Cordova tried to install Mac OS X 10.1 on her QuickSilver G4. She got the "error has occurred" message for some unspecified reason. However, the real problem was that after that she could no longer startup in her existing version of OS X 10.0.x. Instead, she now gets the broken folder icon at startup. First Aid gave a "keys out of order (1,1)" error which it could not fix. We thought a reinstall of OS X 10.0.4 would fix this, but Becky said no. Eventually, she booted from an OS 9 CD, copied all files to an external drive and then reformatted.[As we have noted before, the inability to startup from an OS X CD and access the Finder - such as to copy files - remains one of the big weaknesses of OS X, from a troubleshooting perspective.]

Norton AntiVirus locks files? We have a couple of reports suggesting that running Norton AntiVirus 7.x for OS X can lead to a problem where many files on your drive become locked. According to postings in Symantec's Forums, they are investigating this.

Meeting Maker, OS X and OTInetClientLib glitch Jesse Miller reports this oddity (we have not had other confirmations of this): "I have been running Meeting Maker 6.0.8 in classic (10.0.4 w/ 9.2.1) for a while now and it has been working fine. However, I recently made the switch to 10.1, and found that Meeting Maker would quit immediately after opening. No windows, nothing. Just an icon in the dock, and then it would disappear. I booted back into 9.2.1 and tried running it there. I was given an error message telling me that "OTInetClientLib could not be found." I tried reinstalling 9.2.1, but the problem still remains."

Update: Kevin Jerbi has had success with Meeting Maker. He suggests trashing OpenTransport and Meeting Maker preferences files.

Stickies failure to save changes? Francois Ingrand found that any changes he made to Stickies notes in OS X 10.1 were not saved. Each time he reopened the application, the default notes reappeared. We have seen this on one of our Macs running OS X 10.1 (it eventually stopped) but not the other. By the way, the notes are stored in ~/Library/.StickiesDatabase.

No Select-All in Sherlock Ruud Altenburg writes: "I have reported this a long time ago but apparently Apple still hasn't solved it in OS X 10.1: 'Select All' does not work for items found in Sherlock. The only way to select all items is to click the first, scroll down, and shift-click the last."
