Opening Web Archives in Explorer 4.01: a better work-around

CNET staff
We previously noted that Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01 does not open Web Archive files created in version 4.0. One work-around for this was to remove the "MS Internet Library (PPC)" file installed by Explorer 4.01 and replace it with the version from 4.0. (For reference: Internet Explorer 4.01 installs version 4.0.5 of the Library file; Office 98 installs version 4.0.4; Internet Explorer 4.0 installs version 4.0.2; it is only version 4.0.5 that seems to cause the problem).

However, John Davis reports that, while this works for the Web Archives, it prevented him from launching Outlook Express 4.01 (which apparently requires the 4.0.5 version of the Library file). He contacted Microsoft about this and they suggested avariation on a typical solution for these Library file problems: "Place version 4.0.5 of MS Internet Library (PPC) in the MS Library Folder in the Extensions folder (as installed by IE 4.01). Then place version 4.04 (or version 4.0.2) of MS Internet Library (PPC) in the same folder in which the Internet Explorer application resides." John found that this worked.
