Open Transport 2.7.6: PPPoE issues; ATM conflict?

Several users report problems with Open Transport 2.7.6. The most common issue is the loss of PPPoE connections. The problem stems from the way some PPPoE software modifies Open Transport, and installing a new Open Transport overwrites changes necessary for PPPoE to operate. The fix is to reinstall the PPPoE client software after updating Open Transport.

Sympatico PPPoE Noah Abrahamson writes: "After updating to OT 2.7.6, I had no DSL service. I had to use a dial-up modem to find a copy of MacPoET 1.2 to regain the use of my high speed connection.

Update: Reinstalling Access Manager should allow it to work properly again.

EnterNet Robert Wallace writes: "I updated to the new Open Transport via Software Update. Afterward ATM indeed refused to open and EnterNet refused to work, claiming the EnterNet Extension was missing from the extensions folder even though it was installed. Manually replacing the EnterNet extensions with fresh copies from another hard drive also did not work. Finally, I reinstalled Open Transport with the standalone installer, then deinstalled EnterNet and reinstalled it, and now everything is working fine."

Update: Patrick Yeung similarly reports: "I upgraded to Open Transport 2.7.6 and found out my EnterNet 300 v1.09 (PPPoE dialer) doesn't work anymore. The application just reports the EnterNet is not loaded even all extensions installed."

Simon Mundy, Pat Kelly and Russ Gorman reported the same Enternet-failure symptom. Again, reinstalling Enternet software appeared to be the key to getting it to work.

Update: Gary Hobish writes: "It is normal to have to reinstall EnterNet after upgrading Open Transport or the OS. Duane Murphy claims this is covered in the "instructions for EnterNet or the EnterNet FAQ. However, a new version of EnterNet is being released that works with Apple's Remote Access and does not require this modification." Apparently, EnterNet modifies an Open Transport file (one user said it modified the TCP/IP control panel) and this modification is lost when Open Transport is updated. That's why the reinstall of EnterNet is required.

Keeping PPoE connections open: MacPoET vs. EnterNet If you use MacPoET for a PPPoE connection it must remain open to keep the connection. EnterNet also will set up a PPPoE connection, but after quitting the application it will remain connected. To disconnect, relaunch EnterNet and disconnect. (Thanks, Ken Marks.)

Update: Anton Tutter writes: "Another alternative is to use the EnterNet Control Strip Module to connect and disconnect without launching the application." Mike Strum concurs.

Update: Bob Gallant offers this clarification: "MacPoEt is used initiate a PPPoE connection. After starting the connection, doing a Force Quit on MacPoEt closes the application but leaves the connection open. Doing a normal quit via the "File" pull-down menu quits the application and shuts down the PPPoE connection."

Adobe Type Manager incompatible? Al Revzin also reports that installing Open Transport 2.7.6 inhibits ATM from opening properly. Several other users have reported problems, and others have reported no trouble whatsoever. No clear pattern as emerged as to the cause.
