On the outs with your BlackBerry? (poll)

The BlackBerry service outage has spread from Europe, the Middle East, India, and Africa to North America. Is this multiday problem big enough to affect your BlackBerry love affair?

RIM

It's spreading like a bad rumor. The BlackBerry outage that hit Europe, the Middle East, India, Africa, and parts of South America earlier this week today crept into North America--much to the chagrin of BlackBerry users who feel left in the dark.

It all started Monday, when subscribers ran into problems accessing e-mail, the Web, and BlackBerry Messenger.

RIM announced that same day that a fix went into effect, but the issue persists and service problems are now cropping up in Canada and the U.S. Some subscribers are noticing e-mail delays.

RIM has acknowledged a problem with its service in the U.S. and Canada, providing an explanation during a conference call with reporters today about the cause. The outage that started at an operation center in Europe has caused a backlog issue, clogging up the BlackBerry network worldwide.

They don't call them CrackBerrys for nothing, but reliability issues can be enough to turn people off from even the strongest addiction to a technology or gadget. This might force some people to do the unthinkable: make actual voice calls.

We know you have strong feelings about your BlackBerry. Is this outage putting you on the outs with your device? Vote in our poll and tell us how your phone is doing in the comments.

Update 1:51 p.m. PT: This story has been updated with information from the conference call with RIM executives.
