OmniPage and Mac OS 8.5 conflict: a work-around from Caere

CNET staff
Kathleen Anast found that OmniPage Pro kept crashing when run on her G3/300 using Mac OS 8.5. She contacted Caere Technical Support, who replied:
If you are selecting the "Works like AppleScan" in the Chooser, this is a known problem with Mac OS 8.5.x. The problem is a conflict between the AppleScan Extension and the 9 Open Transport extensions. We do not have a fix for this at this time but are working on one. The work-around is to create a duplicate extension set in Extension Manager and remove the Open Transport extensions from it and, when you want to run OmniPage Pro, boot to that set.

Update: Ron Earl writes: "I had this problem with my Umax scanner, but switched to using the newer Umax extension that comes with the later versions of the software and everything has been working fine for a couple of months."

Update: Randy Maynard claims: "A much easier work around is to use the VistaScan DA application to scan documents and then select 'load' via 'scan' in OmniPage Pro."
