Older versions of iTunes now able to access store again

CNET staff

We previously reported an issue where Apple appeared to be indirectly blocking users of iTunes 4.9 or earlier out of the iTunes store. Those with iTunes versions 4.9 and earlier received the message:

  • "Could not complete your request.  The store may be busy."

We've now received reports from readers indicating that access for these older versions has been restored.

MacFixIt reader Nick writes:

"The other week I had spotted an blurb about a user not being able to access iTunes Store with an older version of iTunes.  I had the same problem for a few days at both home and at work.  I had emailed my confirmation of findings at the time.  In case I missed any update to the situation on macfixit, here is the new news.  I can now access iTMS at home on my Pismo (4.7), my last of the line PowerBook G4 1.67GHz 15" dual layer (4.9), and my junky Dell at work (4.7 Windows version).  I have not tried to buy music because I figure that it still blocked, but at least now I can browse the selections and look for new music."
