Old, already applied updates appearing in Software Update

UPDATE: It appears this issue has now been resolved on Apple's end, and the already applied software updates are no longer erroneously appearing.

------

Several users are reporting that old, already applied system updates are appearing in Software Update after the February 15th updates (Security Update 2007-002, Daylight saving time update [2/15] for Mac OS X 10.4.8 and 10.3.9, Java for Mac OS X 10.4 Release 5, Java for Mac OS X 10.3 Update 5) are installed.

In most cases, users are being told they they need to install the iTunes QuickTime 7.0.2 and Security Update 2007-001 1.0 packages, which were already applied. Upon attempting to download and install these updates, users are greeted with a message indicating either that the packages could not be expanded correctly or simply a failed download.

MacFixIt reader Bob O'Driscoll writes:

"I installed these (February 15th) ipdates on 3 iMacs with no apparent problem using the automatic update. However, when I re-run Software Update, the G5 iMacs tell me that I need to install iTunes QuickTime 7.0.2 and Security Update 2007-001 1.0. These are already installed. If I try to install them anyway, the download starts and then fails. Rerunning Software Update on the Core-2 Duo iMac tells me, as expected, that no updates are available."

Another reader, George Dusablon adds:

"Checked Software Update this morning and it says I need the 2007-001 Security update and iTunes 7.0.2. I had applied both of those when they first came out! Verified that I am running iTunes 7.0.2. Appears that something has hosed up after applying the 2007-002 Security update! "

In some cases, this issue can be resolved by deleting the following folder:

  • /Library/Caches/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate

Otherwise, the already-applied updates should simply be unchecked in Software Update and ignored.
