Office 2004 inter-pasting issue: Large graphics not completely copied

CNET staff

MacFixIt reader James McMillan reports that in Microsoft's Office 2004, large graphics are sometimes not completely pasted inter-application (that is, between two separate Office apps).

McMillan writes "Microsoft has confirmed the problem to me but has not been able to supply a solution.

"In Excel, when selecting 'Copy Picture' (use the shift key on the Edit menu), two options are presented: 'as shown on screen' and 'as shown when printed.' In Word, when using 'paste special' and then 'picture', the pasted graphic is incomplete. The pasted graphic may be truncated at the right or may be missing some charts or chart components. Using 'as shown on screen' produces better results than 'as shown when printed', but neither option works correctly for large graphics.

Potential workaround A potential, Microsoft-supplied workaround for this issue is to use the 'as shown on screen' option, then open Apple's Preview application (located in the /Applications folder on a standard installation) and then accessing the option "New from Clipboard" from the FIle menu. Once the graphic is shown in Preview, again copy it and then use the "Paste Special > Picture" option in the desired Office application.
