This week, Microsoft released Office 2004 11.1.1, which includes a number of enhancements for the popular productivity suite.

Problems installing A number of users are reporting issues installing the update, receiving the error "verification failed" when attempting to expand the downloadable .dmg, or simply seeing a stalled installation progress bar.

One reader writes "I'm running Mac OS X 10.3.8 and have Office 2004 11.1.0 installed currently. I have not been able to install this update [...] When I run the installer, it displays the 'Gathering Information...' dialogue and then hangs my entire computer.

Another reader adds "This file continually displays the message 'Verification failed', which I'm assuming is some sort of checksum that DiskImageMounter is warning, and it then quits."

In some cases, users are able to solve this issue by using the "Check for Updates" command available in the Help menu of any Office 2004 application.

Unresolved issues Meanwhile, users note a number of unresolved issues after applying the update.

Tom Lauck writes "The update does not fix the conflict between Excel and Acrobat that results in a warning dialogue box whenever quitting Excel." [Ed. - This issue can be resolved, however, by upgrading to the latest version of Adobe Reader (7.0) or Adobe Reader 6.0.3 (available while running Acrobat in the Help-Updates Menu Item)]

Christopher Kovacs adds "Word and Excel still don't recognize the Symbol font, although oddly enough, PowerPoint does recognize it. Word and Excel just present open squares in place of the symbol font. I have to resort to opening a document with Office X if it requires the Symbol font, and that means very many of my Word documents."
