Safari and online banking We've previously covered a number of reports of Safari not being compatible with some financial institution websites. The issue most frequently cited by these institutions as their reason for not supporting Safari is that Safari does not "honor" certain security measures they have put in place to "flush" private information from browser cookies/caches after leaving their site. A recent email received from NatWest Bank is representative:

"Our service includes code which is designed to remove any customer account information from your computer when you exit the service. This is intended to prevent subsequent unauthorised viewing of account information. We have found that Safari continues to store this information. We have contacted [Apple] regarding the concern and at this time they have been unable to offer us a solution. Until such time as [Apple] addresses our concerns and amends the behaviour of their browser we will not be able to support Safari. In the meantime we will continue to communicate with Safari on this issue and will test new versions of their browser as they become available.?

In what is surely welcome news to users who have experienced such problems with their financial institutions, we've received confirmation from Apple sources that they are aware of the issue and, presumably, are working on "fixes" for Safari that will allow it to be more widely supported for such use.
