Odds and Ends: PowerMac G5 2.5 GHz ship date; DiskUtil petition; more

PowerMac G5 2.5 GHz ship date Several readers have received the following note from Apple, indicating that the Dual 2.5GHz PowerMac G5 will be shipping in late August:

"The demand for this item has been incredible. We are shipping them as quickly as possible, but cannot meet the ship date we previously estimated for you. We now expect to ship your Power Mac on or before August 20th.

"Please rest assured that we fulfill all orders in the order they are received. If we do not hear from you prior to shipment, we will assume the revised date is acceptable, and will ship your order. We will notify you if there are any changes to the revised ship date."

UPDATE: It seems some users are already taking shipment of their new Dual 2.5 GHz G5s. MacFixIt reader Markus Marschall writes:

"I ordered my G5 2.5DP on 6/10/04: Basic system minus the modem. Yesterday I got the notice about shipping date of 8/20 or before. Later yesterday I got the notice about shipping date of 8/02 or before. Today I got the notice That it has been shipped:

"The following products shipped on 07/30/2004: Z0ACFLL/A 2.5DPG5/512MB/160/SD/R9600XT-USA, $2,970.00."

DiskUtil petition As previously noted, the built-in permissions repair utility "diskutil" hangs in single user mode under Mac OS X 10.3.x. The bug has been acknowledged by Apple.

MacFixIt reader Dan has notified us of a petition requesting that Apple fix this problem.
