Odds and Ends: Macs immune to recent hacker hijacks; FirmTek offers Serial ATA for older Macs

Macs immune to recent hacker hijacks The New York Times discusses a recent phenomenon where more than a thousand unsuspecting Internet users around the world have recently had their computers hijacked by hackers, who computer security experts say are using them for pornographic Web sites.

Fortunately, Macs are apparently immune to the invasion. The Times article states "Computer owners can protect themselves by using firewall software or hardware, which prevent unauthorized entry and use of computers, Mr. Smith (one of the quoted "experts") said. The rogue program does not affect the Apple Macintosh line of computers or computers running variants of the Unix operating system."

FirmTek offers Serial ATA for older Macs While Apple's new Power Macintosh G5 systems will sport the new high-speed I/O standard stock, older Macs will have to rely on companies like FirmTek for Serial ATA expansion. Serial ATA offers speeds of up to 150MBytes/sec, or about twice as fast as FireWire 800. The adapter's dual-port internal host controller support for up to two storage devices, while the 48-bit LBA capability delivers support for drives beyond the 137 GB limit of many host adapters. The SeriTek/1S2 host adapter will begin shipping mid-August 2003, with estimated retail pricing starting at US$ 70. More.
