Odds and Ends: Keyboard viewer erratic behavior; Word 2004 page numbering issue follow-up; Knowledge Base updates

Keyboard Viewer erratic behavior Reader Colin Gallagher describes an issue with Panther's Keyboard Viewer where the Viewer palette will disappear and reappear erratically:

"The Viewer attempts to load and is even visible for a few seconds, but before you can click on anything, it disappears. After a minute or so it will reappear, again just for a few seconds and then vanish again. This continues ad nauseum until it is disabled - making it completely useless...The viewer works fine on my TiBook, but crashes on my similarly set up (and exact same keyboard/mouse) G5."

Although we haven't seen this issue at MacFixIt, Colin also pointed out an Apple Discussions thread where several other users have noted this problem. Although several suggested fixes have been posted in that thread, none of them have solved the problem for Colin.

Word 2004 page number issue: follow-up On Wednesday, we covered a report of an odd page numbering issue in Word 2004 where using the footer notation "Page {PAGE} OF {NUMPAGES}", which should result in page notations of "1 of 10," "2 of 10," etc. when printed, instead produced incorrect notations of "1 of 1," "2 of 2," etc. We were unable to reproduce this problem here at MacFixIt -- which is often the case with problems reported by users, and doesn't necessarily mean that the issue isn't affecting other users -- so we posted the story in hopes of eliciting feedback from other users who may be experiencing the same issue.

So far, no other MacFixIt readers have reported being able to reproduce the problem. The user who first reported it even sent us a file that exhibits the problem on his computers; it printed properly here at MacFixIt, so clearly this isn't a general bug in Word. We're working with the reader to try to find the cause, and will keep readers updated as we learn more.
