Odds and Ends: HP ScanJet Processor Usage

HP ScanJet Processor Usage MacFixIt reader Mike reports extremely high processor time allocation used by HP's ScanJet software:

"I recently purchased an HP Scanjet 3500c. After downloading the latest version of the scanning softwar I installed it. And everything was fine...I thought. Immediately after I noticed a major hit in performance on my 800mhz G4. A trip to the Process Viewer shed a little more light on things. There is a Process running called HP Scanjet Manager even when the actual scanning software has been shut down. Even more alarming is that it generally hogs between 50% and 80% of my CPU usage (a couple of times making it as high as 92%), hence my drop in performance. For the time being going to the Process Viewer and killing that particular process brings everything back to normal."

Dave Burbank had a similar experience:

"I just purchased an HP Scanjet 3500c flatbed scanner. After downloading and installing the latest HP Scanning Software (version 5.1.1) I noticed that the internal disk in my PowerBook G4 (OS X 10.2.1) was being accessed every 1 second. The disk access click every second was driving me crazy. I discovered that after disabling the hidden 'HP Scanjet Manager' application which launches on startup (Login Items Preference Pane), the clicks went away."
