AutoFill function in iTunes not working properly MacFixIt reader Scott Rose reports a minor bug in the AutoFill feature introduced in iTunes 4.7.1.

"According to iTunes help, 'If you set iTunes to choose songs randomly, you can update the iPod shuffle playlist by clicking the Autofill button again.' And this is correct -- every single time you click on the Autofill button, the playlist recreates itself over and over again.

"However, this feature fails if you uncheck the box that says 'Replace all songs when Autofilling.' According to iTunes help, 'When this [Replace all songs when Autofilling] checkbox is not checked, clicking Autofill adds new songs that meet the criteria set at the bottom of the window without replacing any songs you've added to the list by dragging.'

"But iTunes only does this the first time you click on the "autofill" button but not subsequent times... therefore making it very difficult to just keep a few of your favorite albums on your iPod Shuffle while having the rest of the songs randomly changing from time-to-time.

"If you want some of your favorite albums to always remain on the iPod Shuffle while randomly selecting the rest, you'll have to manually recreate it every time, or create 2 playlists that you drag into the iPod Shuffle every time (one with your favorite albums, another random playlist that you re-create every time)."
