Unicode bidirectional control characters in file names A reader pointed us to this web page, which contains details of problems that may occur with file names that contain bidirectional control characters (such as used with Hebrew) - and how to fix them.

CERT Advisory CA-2002-17 Apache Web Server Chunk Handling Vulnerability In a posting yesterday, CERT states: "There is a remotely exploitable vulnerability in the way that Apache web servers (or other web servers based on their source code) handle data encoded in chunks." This can affect OS X, as it uses the Apache software. Apache 1.3.26 has already been released to address this issue. Apple will likely add this in a future version of OS X. Otherwise, assuming you are familiar with how to do such things in Uxix, you can install it yourself. (Thanks, Scott Boone.)

More info on bypassing "no ink" errors Following up on yesterday's item on "Bypassing 'no ink' errors" with Epson printers: This page has details on buying and adding a "continuous ink system" (CIS) to Epson printers. It also has an FAQ that explains why the reported ink level may keep dropping even though the ink bottles are full. There are separate answers and fixes for both "chipped" and "non-chipped" printers. (Thanks, Lloyd Smith.)

AOL beta version expires? Several readers have noted that older beta versions of the America Online client for Mac OS X 5.1.3 no longer work, generating a "Version not supported" error. The solution apparently is to sign on via a non-beta version (in OS 9) that still works and download the latest beta version for OS X.

Update: A reader notes: "The AOL beta area states that, when creating a new beta version, AOL turns off old beta builds within 5 days. GM releases are not turned off. So keep a GM OS X release handy."

AOL users can go here to get a working version of AOL for OS X without having to logon to AOL. (Thanks, Brian Soderstrom.)

AOL Address Book change explained Verlin Brown received the following note from AOL regarding Address Book listings in the AOL client after updating from the Classic to the OS X version: "What caused this change in the Address Book was the change from Classic OS to the OS X version of AOL. In Classic OS version there was only one Address Book for the AOL software. In OS X it was updated to be Screen Name specific. Since the Address Book was not Screen Name specific in the previous versions, the entire Address Book was copied to all Screen Names during the upgrade process."

Icons vanish Tom Sykes reports having problems where the icon of certain files vanish in the Finder, leaving only the text name. We have occasional seen this symptom. Sometimes just opening the file's Show Info window fixes it; a log out almost always fixes it. In Tom's case, he believes it is somehow related to TinkerTool, as the problem first appeared after he installed it. We are not convinced this is the case, but do not know what the actual cause may be.

ImageBrowser 2.3 available for free Previously, we noted a Canon page indicating that they planned to charge for CDs that contain the carbonized version of their digital camera software. They have apparently changed their mind. A Carbonized version of the ImageBrowser 2.3 update is now available. (Thanks, Darrell Kienzle.)

Update: Kevin Bolduan replies: "Note: In order to install the update, you have to have the original CD that came with your Canon camera."

Quark for OS X coming? Michael Allured was told by Quark that Quark XPress 6 will include OS X support. They claimed it would be out within 6 months.
