Retrospect/ASIP Conflict

Timeslips axed Pete Walker reports receiving the following message from the publisher of the popular time billing software, Timeslips:

"In our continued effort to focus our Windows product and how it can best serve our customers, we have made the difficult decision to phase out Timeslips for Macintosh from our product offerings. Effective August 30, 2002, all products and services for the Timeslips for Macintosh line will no longer be available for purchase."

Timeslips says it "encourages all of our Macintosh customers to consider moving to the latest release, Timeslips version 11 for Windows."

DVD-RAM tape After yesterday's item from Bruce Shanker that suggested using tape to cover the plug on certain DVD-RAM media in order for proper function, several readers note similar success.

"I didn't remove any plugs, but I found that taping over the bottom left corner of the cartridge (where the plug and the write-protect lever is located) enabled me to format the disk just fine," writes Fred Connally.

"I had the same problem with a Memorex 4.7 GB Type II cart and Bruce Shanker's suggestion worked perfectly, although I used plain 'Scotch' tape and had to put a long enough piece to keep the mechanism from pushing it in," writes Scott Hillmann.

Retrospect/ASIP conflict Dantz issued a message on the Retrospect e-mail list detailing several conflicts between Retrospect and AppleShare IP, including a crash at the beginning of a backup. The company's technical support team explains the root of the problems:

"Retrospect 5.0 uses HFS file system calls, as specified by Apple, which stimulate bugs in the AppleShare IP software. We have reported all of these problems to Apple, but Apple's development efforts are now focused on Mac OS X Server. Without a commitment by Apple to address these problems, we have no choice but to suggest that our customers consider replacing AppleShare IP with Mac OS X Server."
