TechTool 1.1.9 coming next week MicroMat has announced that TechTool 1.1.9 (the freeware version) will be released by November 8th. It will be Mac OS 9 compatible.

Mac OS 9 starting to ship with new Macs Chris Freemesser writes: "Our department received a new bronze PowerBook G3 yesterday, and it arrived with Mac OS 9 on it."

Year 2000 is a leap year Just in case you were wondering. There is a February 29 in the year 2000. As it is a leap year, this may not surprise you. However, years that end in 00 are supposed to be an exception to the rule. But there is an exception to the exception, and the year 2000 fits it. Either of these two web sites (a and b) provide more details (also see this Apple TIL article). The potential problem here is software that knows about the exception, but not the exception to the exception. In this case, the software may mistakenly omit February 29. So far, I am unaware of any Macintosh program that does this.

Update: Mike Braziel notes: "Accelerated Reader v3.x from Advantage Learning Systems has this exact problem. After several calls to AL and a moderate amount of testing, they did finally admit the problem to me several months ago. The program works fine on Feb 28, 2000, and on Mar 1, 2000. On Feb 29, 2000 however, it gives an invalid date error. There is a new version (actually now a second new version) that is supposed to fix the problem."

Apple Education = 1 Rebutting claims from Dell Computer, Apple asserts that it remains numero uno in the education market. See this press release.
