Mac OS 9 ShareWay extension not installed via Custom Install Jason Iler writes: "The ShareWay IP Personal Bgnd is the extension necessary to enable File Sharing over TCP/IP. If this extension is not loaded, the checkbox in File Sharing will remain grayed out, and you will be limited to standard LocalTalk/EtherTalk communications." However, Jason found that this extension does not get installed if you do any changes to the Installer's "recommended" installation - even if your change would appear to have no effect on this software. So, if you want this feature, do an Easy Install or Clean Install first. Then make your customized changes. Another alternative would be to use TomeViewer to extract the extension from the Tome file.
Update: Slava Serota notes that in the CD Extras folder of the Mac OS 9 CD, there is a folder called File Sharing Extras. Inside there is a folder called ShareWay IP 3.0. Here you will find other Shareway software as well as information about using Shareway. There is a file here called "ShareWay IP Personal Background" which seems virtually identical to "ShareWay IP Personal Bgnd."

Getting Virex Definitions files Two readers (Charlie Conway and John Haffner) note that monthly Virex Definitions files are no longer available from the Dr. Solomon web site. The Network Associates site still lists them, as does a McAfee site.

Photoshop 5.5 and G4 Yosemite boards: a conflict? Brian Cameron reports a glitch with Photoshop 5.5 on a G4 350 Yosemite (PCI Graphics) boards. Apparently, the AltiVec plug-in causes a startup freeze on these machines. When Brian removed the extension, the problem vanished. Adobe is investigating. We have not had other reports of this as yet.

Update: William Perez writes: "I too was having this problem. I discovered that the G4 had the wrong system software - the ReadMe files all said 'G3' instead of 'G4' as if the hard disk was taken from a G3/BW. I did a G4 System Restore including reformatting the drive to replace the entire system and now everything is fine!" William found that only some of his G4s had this problem (perhaps just some early units?)

GoLive and JLK bug? Matthew Godden found a bug in GoLive 4.0.1, at least when running Mac OS 8.6 and the Japanese Language Kit: "If a person creates a page using a Japanese encoding that contains a Text Area Field (from the forms tab on the palette) and attempts to save the file, GoLive will lock up and need to be force quit. This probably isn't a very common issue, but it is a major problem for those of us who work on double byte web sites."
