PCI FireWire card inhibits CD burns Michael Mortilla writes: "A PCI FireWire card with both a hard disk and a CD burner will not allow burning CDs from files on the FireWire drive. The workaround is to copy the files to an internal drive before attempting to create a CD. My PPC 9500/400 with Os 8.6 has a FireWire PCI card hosting to a LaCie 60 GB drive and a Yamaha 12x burner. The write operation fails every time. Both the problem and workaround were confirmed by the top notch tech support at LaCie. Both the CD burner and HD work perfectly otherwise."

Update: Paul Edwards replies: "I've not found that to be true with my set-up. I have a PowerComputing PowerCenter120 (upgraded with Newer Tech G3 card) running 9.0.4, and a Sonnet Tango PCI FireWire/USB card. On the FireWire bus, I have an external APS CD-RW 16x10x40 FireWire Plus Pro2 and an external APS 80GB FireWire Plus Pro2 Hard Drive. Each external drive is connected directly to a FireWire port on the PCI card. Toast Titanium burns CD's just fine, not matter whether the external drives are both on the FireWire bus, both on the USB bus, or one drive on each bus."

FileMaker 5.5v2 updater installer issues Don Gillespie writes: "There are 2 versions of the updater. Only one appears to be visible on the FileMaker Web site -- the OS X version. However, the VersionTracker link connects to the 9 version. Also if anything is changed in the FMP 5.5 directory, such as the ReadMe file, the installer fails. I had modified the ReadMe to have a different typeface. Had to reinstall 5.5 from disk and then upgrade it to 5.5v2."

Update: A well informed source has helped clarify this report. He writes: "While there may be specific cases where the any updater could fail, this is not as broad an issue as suggested. I’ve changed the filename and contents of the original Read Me file, for example, and the update was successful. The updater moves original files into the FileMaker.old folder. If a file, such as the Read Me, is changed so that it cannot be located, it is neither moved nor replaced by the updater. It’s possible that additional factors necessitated Mr. Gillespie’s re-installation." All the 5.5v2 updaters can be downloaded from this page. (Thanks, Scott Beyer and others.)

Xerox Docuprint N2825 and Adobe PS 8.7.3 Conflict Dan Smith writes: "I have experienced a problem across several G4 machines (450/AGP, 400/PCI, 400/DA, 733/QS, etc.) under both OS 9.2.1 and 9.2.2: the Docuprint N2825 is selected in the Chooser using the Adobe PS 8.7.x driver (8.7.3 is the latest), but the Chooser forgets the printer selection after restart. The printer is connected via an Ethernet network over Appletalk. The problem does not occur with our similarly connected HP 4100TN, HP 4000TN, or HP 5M. The problem also does not present using Apple LaserWriter 8.7.x driver."

Citrix client fails under OS 9.2.2? Chris DeMorell writes: "We are running version 4.1 of the Citrix client for Macintosh for about 100 users. After updating to 9.2.2, we tried to access the C: drive through Citrix, which points to the local hard drive on the Mac, and the Citrix server crashed. Doing this on any earlier version of the Mac OS works fine. We also noticed this same issue when using version 6 of the Citrix client with any version of Mac OS 9."

Update: Mark Brown writes: "I am using Citrix Client 6.20.127 on MacOS 9.2.1, and not having any problems with it."

Update: Joseph Holmes points out this page on the Citrix site that offers a possible fix. He writes: "I deleted the Citrix prefs folder, reinstalled the Citrix client, and then launched the Editor and made a small change to the Citrix Connection Center document and saved it. All then ran perfectly and I use thje Citrix client daily."

Update: Mark Guertin adds: "If you are running a version of Metaframe Server that is less than 1.8, the Citrix ICA client 4.1 for Mac OS is the only good choice. Citrix has confirmed that there are redraw and freezing problems when using server versions less than 1.8 with any of the the newer (6.0 or better) ICA clients. Their advice was to update to latest server version."
