Norton Utilities version number glitch Several readers (including Ken Beck and Robert Barden) report that, after updating to Norton Utilities 4.0.1, the version number for Norton Disk Doctor, as listed in the Apple menu, still says version 3.5.2. The Get Info window version number is listed correctly. Symantec is checking into this.
Update: Ric Spiegel says that if you delete the Norton DD Preferences file, a new one will be created and the version number will be listed correctly. Steve Maser dumped the entire Norton Utilities Preferences folder and also had success.

Norton AntiVirus and Corel Draw 8 conflict? Francisco Carrapico claims that Norton AntiVirus 5.0.x conflicts with Corel Draw 8.0. Corel Draw freezes on launch when NAV is installed; disabling NAV eliminates the freeze. I have not had other reports of this as yet, so this may not be a universal problem. One reader now reports that he did not have the problem.

Improper shut down message won't go away Do you get an "improper shutdown" message at every startup? An Apple TIL file, Mac OS: Shutdown Warning Appears At Every Startup (#24687), explains that this is due to corruption of an invisible file called Shutdown Check. It explains one way to get rid of it.

PowerBook G3 series can lose date and time settings Jeremy Reichma notes that the "backup battery" on a PowerBook G3 Series may run out sooner than you think - in certain situations. As noted in an August 98 Apple TIL file (#30580): "The PowerBook G3 Series has the ability to use two media bay devices and run from the AC adapter with no main battery installed. If a customer chooses to store or transport the PowerBook with out a main battery installed, they should understand that a fully charged backup battery by itself will maintain date and time, as well as other parameter RAM settings, for approximately 5 hours."

Consultant 2.5.3 coming Chronos told Dale Sorenson: "Because of complaints, we have re-worked our category synchronization to make categories in Consultant appear less global when syncing. In other words, you won't see unwanted Categories in your Memos, etc." Expect a new 2.53 version to have this fix.

TechTool updates coming Expect an update next week that will fix the shut down freeze caused by TechTool Pro's Protection extension. TechTool freeware version 1.1.8 is also in the works. It will add Mac OS 8.5 compatibility.

FAXstf Pro update is due next week It will fix the AutoPrint problem in version 5.0.2. (Thanks, Terry Freedman.)
