Odds & Ends: Newer and Asanté conflict?; Newer and Que! drive

Newer and Asanté conflict? Shannon Calvert found an apparent "conflict between Newer MaxPowr G4 accelerators and Asanté Ethernet cards that results in freezes when copying a large folder over Ethernet. After wasting a few hours troubleshooting the problem on our 100base-T network (a G4 server with AppleShare over TCP/IP), I noticed several posts regarding this conflict on Asanté's Web site. Sure enough, both of our G4-upgraded machines worked fine (albeit more slowly) with MaxPowr G3 cards.

Update: Michael Kidd adds: "I had similar problem, but it was with a MacSense 10/100 Ethernet card and the Newer G4 upgrade for a 9500. I finally switched the Ethernet card to a different PCI slot and all problems vanished!"

Newer and Que! drive Jim Bain writes: "Newer's FireWire 2 Go and Que's DVD-RAM drive are incompatible. Newer's technical support says it may be because their card does not support the OHCI protocol (see TIL article #31132). A Que technical support person was unable to tell me if their drive requires OHCI support."

Lexmark printer error work-around Jeremy Reichman was having problems with his Lexmark Color Jetprinter Z52. When trying to print from a Mac connected to the printer via USB Printer Sharing, he kept getting an error message that said the color ink cartridge was missing or not installed properly (which was not the case, as printing worked from the host computer to which the printer was physically connected). He eventually found that if he copied the "Lexmark Z52 Preferences" and "Lexmark Z52 Prefs" files from the host computer to the problem one, the symptoms vanished.

Netscape/Mozilla folder restriction? Andrew Thompson claims (although we have not yet confirmed) that with Netscape 6 pr2 or Mozilla M17, if you use the installer to install Netscape 6 PR2 or Mozilla M17 you can't move or rename the folder its in, otherwise it locks up with a plain white screen on startup. There are two workarounds: 1) don't move or rename the folder; Download a non-installer based M17.

Suitcase and Illustrator conflict? Extensis Suitcase does not recognize new fonts opened in Suitcase after Illustrator 8 has been launched. Susan Pedley writes: "After you open new fonts in Suitcase, you have to quit and relaunch Illustrator to see them." There are several messages posted on the Extensis Web site's support forum that indicate Extensis is aware of the issue and is working on a fix.

Alphabetize OE groups In this MacFixIt Forums thread, Charles Downs explains how to alphabetize an Outlook Express email address "group."
