Mimio Type 2 error A reader wrote to Virtual Ink with the following question: "Why do I receive a Type 2 error upon launching Mimio 1.5 on G3 All-in-One using Mac OS 9.0.4 or even OS 8.6?" They replied: "We are aware for this issue. At this point we do not have a solution. Our engineers are looking into the problem. We hope to have a fix soon." Another reader confirms that the problem is likely not limited to a specific Mac model; however it does not occur on every launch.

Toast 5.0.2 write failures We have two reports of problems with Toast 5.0.2 failing to write a CD. In both cases, the Macs in question were "older" models (Mac 7500/ XLR8 G3 400 and G3 upgraded with a Sonnet G4 ZIF card). One reader reported that the problem did not occur on his G4 Mac. The other noted that deleting the often troublesome Toast CD Reader extension [See previous coverage] fixed the problem for him. Kathryn Jenkins notes that sometimes these problems are limited to the Disc-At-Once recording mode.

Now Up-to-Date install problem? David Kanter had a problem updating Now Up-to-Date & Contact 4.0.2 to 4.0.3. He received the following reply from Power On: "We are currently working with the makers of InstallerVise to find out why their installer isn't properly updating the Now Contact information. In the meantime you may want to download the 4.0.3 full installer and use that instead of the updater."

Getting SanDisk Reader and Nikon camera to work Regarding our previous coverage of SanDisk Reader problems, Ken Hoyle offers this solution, which worked for his NikonView camera:

  1. Remove all software SanDisk and Nikon software, including preferences files.
  2. Install the original SanDisk driver from the CD that came with the Reader.
  3. Install the latest driver from the SanDisk website for your type of Reader.
  4. Install latest version of NikonView from Nikon website.

That's it. Also, avoid connecting the reader through a USB hub, as that too may cause problems.

Adaptec 39160 boot problem? Jim Reffner found that the latest (1.2) firmware for the Adaptec 39160 SCSI card prevented him from booting to a SCSI drive. Downgrading to firmware 1.0.2 fixed this. Adaptec's support page for this card gives no indication that such a problem exists, so we suspect it is not a universal issue. By the way, the support page does remind Mac users of the continuing problem with "deep sleep" and some G4s.

ATI extensions needed for GeForce cards? Todd Ryckman found that if he disabled the ATI extensions that were included on his new QuickSilver G4, graphic performance slowed considerably - even though he had an Nvidia GeForce 2 MX card.
